Packing in a powerful V10 engine, the fuel economy of the R8 seems like an acceptable trade-off. No small feat, considering the Audi weighs more than 3,500 lbs. It is only a slither past the 95-feet braking distance of 570S spider, making it the second-best braking car in its segment. It can come to a full stop from moving at 60 mph within 97 feet. This gives it a very good braking power over the rest of its competition. The latest update to the R8 Spyder gives carbon-ceramic brakes as standard to all trims. Its large twin-turbo V8 is just not enough to pull its hefty body quick enough. The Lamborghini Huracan falls behind despite the same engine due to Audi's excellent Quattro AWD that grants it more traction. In a quarter-mile drag, the R8 leaves most of its competition biting the dust surpassed only by the wild McLaren 570S Spider. The top speed is 202 mph, which is greater than both the Mercedes AMG GT(198 mph) and the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder(199 mph).Ģ020 Audi R8 Spyder goes to 60 mph from naught in 3.3 sec You don’t get a breakneck-worthy start, but it will go to 60 mph from naught in 3.3 sec, which is more than good enough. Its acceleration is sweet but controlled. The R8 gives an instantaneous response off the line. The composed AWD may also strip you of some drifting fun, something every petrolhead gets the kick out of on a regular basis. The entirety of the R8 Spyder's competition has more torque, which further translates to better acceleration for most of them. Though the naturally-aspirated engine feels good, the numbers suggest a turbo or two wouldn't go amiss. Unless you are really flooring the pedal, it offers a pleasant experience when out on a relaxing drive. Once you put the transmission in automatic mode, you can barely notice the shifts out on the open road. The car never feels out of line when downshifting. The shifts are smooth and seamless even if you are using the paddle shifters. The S Tronic transmission does its job well no matter which of the engines sits under the hood. It gives those looking for an edge over the competition just enough push to dominate any track day you may have in mind. The Performance trim turns it up a notch by adding 40 more horses, making the experience more intense. It can be a good cruiser when driven in Comfort mode or tear up the back roads with Sport mode. While it lacks the exhilaration of similarly powered cars, it does provide a good balance between practicality and all-out performance. Thus, it is quick to deliver the power of 562 horses as soon as you put your foot down. The 5.2L FSI V10 is untouched by any supercharger or turbocharger feathering. You should go for the base Spyder trim since it is an all-in-one package on its own. The Audi R8 Spyder has all the major interior and exterior features the same on both trims. This all results in an R8 that can easily attain top speeds past the 200-mph mark.ĥ50-watt Bang and Olufsen sound system as standard You also get options to play around the body with carbon-fiber, making it even lighter. This one boasts an even more powerful 602-horsepower V10. However, if you need to edge out the competition on your weekend track day, you may go for the Performance trim. Able to deliver a robust package at less than $190,000, it is rather good value. The base trim is good enough in itself with a 562-hp 5.2L FSI V10 engine. The R8 is available as a convertible in two trims, the base Spyder and the Performance Spyder.
